Serious Family Meetings

So, having a great weekend at RH, except for the heat...and drought.  I have watered well, hope my small trees will be ok.

This weekend one of my BILs was also down, visited his folks.  We got on subject of funerals.   It is one of those conversations that are difficult but necessary.   I have become accustomed to discussing openly.  Some people have harder time.  Some people avoid.  Some joke.

How do you handle it?

  1. I will talk openly about it. Planning on cremation with no service for me.

  2. Dear Nawm, I talk very openly about it now that I'm in my 80s. I purchased a cremation plan and talked to my niece about what I want and am in the midst of planning a memorial service--one that the remaining family--brother, sister-in-law, nephew, nieces, great nieces, great-great nieces and nephews-- will enjoy. Peace.

  3. Both of you follow my preference. To talk openly. My in-laws are a study in contrast...one does not have any preferences, the other wants very specific things including the music, her clothing/shoes and how she wants her glasses and hands positioned. Her children want to carry out her wishes, so we encouraged her to write it all down. I explained to her (as one who has been through three deaths/funeral arrangements personally) that even though she is telling us now, at the time her children will be distraught and grieving and one does not want relay on memory alone. My in laws paid thousands of dollars for prepaid funeral packages only to learn 20-25 years later that the companies that sold them were insolvent. More on that as I learn more...
